How silicon acts as a deoxidizing agent in the steelmaking process

This is a big deal because we need steel for lots of things, such as buildings, cars and trains. It's the silicone that gives the strength to both the products, since without the silicone, the steel would collapse under its own weight. 

The oxygen in steel has to be taken out, when we’re getting to make the steel. Oxygen can render steel weak and brittle. Silicon pulls out the oxygen, so there are only strong things left. This is a process called deoxidizing, and silicon is a bit like a vacuum that sucks up the sludge. By taking out the oxygen, silicon helps the steel not fall apart and be stronger for longer.
