FerroSilicon Powder: Applications and Production Process
FerroSilicon powder, an alloy of iron and silicon (typically 15-90% Si), is widely used in industries such as steelmaking, welding, and chemical manufacturing. It serves as a deoxidizer and alloying agent in steel production, enhances slag formation in welding electrodes, and acts as a reducing agent in metallurgical processes. Additionally, it is utilized in the manufacture of hydrogen gas and heat-resistant coatings.
The production process involves smelting quartz (SiO₂), iron scrap, and carbonaceous reductants (coke/coal) in a submerged arc furnace at high temperatures (1550-1800°C). The molten alloy is then cooled, crushed, and milled into fine powder, with particle size adjusted for specific applications. Strict quality control ensures low impurities and consistent composition.
